Summer Nature Experiences

Farmer In Training Program 2024

For ages 14 to 18

  • 10 weeks: 6/10/24 to 8/16/24

  • Average of 20hrs/week

    • 3 days every week (Wed-Fri) 10am-3pm

    • Additional Saturdays for Aspen Saturday Market (7:30-1:30pm)

  • 4 paid positions/week @ $16/hour

Program Description

The Farm Collaborative is seeking teenagers 14-18 years old with an interest in the outdoors, food systems, farming, and/or a general interest in finding meaningful work for the summer. That's right! The Farm Collaborative is hiring four (4) Farmer In Training (FIT) positions this summer at our Cozy Point Ranch Campus. FIT hires will work side-by-side with our Agriculture Programs Manager in implementing our growing and harvest plan for the summer season, which includes responsibility for daily task such as irrigation, planting, harvest, weeding, wash/pack for market sales, working farmers market, and serving as a mentor to our Junior Farmer and Earth Keepers cohorts at the farm. The Farmer In Training participants will be hired as employees of the farm for 10-weeks from early June to late August (per participants summer break schedule), working 3-4 days/week with an average of 20 hours/week (Wed-Fri; some Saturdays on rotation for scheduled shifts at Aspen Farmer Market), and a starting wage of $16/hour.

Junior Farmers for Ages 10-13

Through nature connection and mentoring, older campers begin to take an active role in caring for our animals, tending to garden spaces, and helping staff with projects around the FarmPark.

All while experiencing curiosity led, wild play and exploration.

For the budding tween/early teen ages 10-14 we are now offering weekly sessions, Monday through Friday starting at 9am to 3pm. The Junior Farmer program welcomes eager, hardworking, responsible participants 10-14 years old to join our Agricultural Education team out in the field to dig in with planting, harvesting, weeding, soil fertility, pasture management, and basic animal husbandry.

Each week will focus on a different component of farming such as: Compost Systems & Applications, Pasture Management & Animal Rotation, Beneficials & Pollinators, Farm to Plate: Harvest & Storage, Seeding & Planting, Water on the Farm.

*The Junior Farmer program is meant for children who are excited to work hard and learn. Attendees will spend time working in the fields, with our animals, and helping the farm run smoothly. Spring Startup

Initial sessions will focus on identifying basic wild foods, prepping and planting a garden, caring for young animals, and basic food preserving techniques.

Gathering

Deep Summer sessions will focus on harvesting and wildcrafting what we gather, tending and caring for our planted plot, and rotating animals in the pasture, creating products, planning and managing weekly farmers’ market booths.

Aprendizaje Ecologico

Sesiónes
Usando las plantas silvestres y el arte salvaje, los cultivos de las verduras, la cría de animales, la preservación de alimentos, y los artes culinarios para inspirar líderes jóvenes y conscientes.

Plantar Primavera
Durante esa sesión enfocamos en la identificación básica de las plantas silvestres, la preparación y siembra de un huerto, el cuidado de animales recién nacidos, y la preservación básica de los alimentos. 

Acopio de Julio
Durante esa sesión enfocamos en la cosecha y el arte salvaje con lo que recolectamos, la cuida del jardín, y rotar los animales en el apacentadero. 

Verano
Durante esa sesión nos enfocamos en cosechar, fermentar, preservar, cocinar, y disfrutar la abundancia de las plantas silvestres y los cultivos que hay en nuestro valle.
